Your Aptitude for starting and running Your Own Business
The author’s book “The Visible Hand” contains a carefully designed test of entrepreneurial aptitudes which emerged from research undertaken for his doctoral dissertation titled “Predictive Criteria for Entrepreneurial Performance”. The test with explanatory notes is reproduced here for your use.
Self-Scored Aptitude Test:
A test (Figure 1) and short-cut sorter (Figure 2) have been designed based on the chapter 18 research findings of required abilities for successful entrepreneurship.
The views of the authorities who have researched the question of entrepreneurial motivation have led to conclusions that drew a clear distinction between:
- Personal dispositions which lead individuals into entrepreneurship,
- Circumstances and environments which impel individuals in that direction, and
- Factors which are conducive to entrepreneurial success.
The history of entrepreneurship has revealed that given appropriate aptitudes, individuals can succeed in their own businesses despite considerable social disadvantages. In fact the entrepreneurial success of refugees from Europe and Asia has prompted some analysts to suggest that it is the very hardships and even rejection by the establishment that results in so many success stories.
However the vital role played by natural intelligence and tenacity cannot be ignored as evidenced in some countries where a claim to disadvantaged status has become an end in itself rather than a goad towards enterprise.
